Droid Accessories, Good and Bad

Droid X

I carry two cellphones, a Blackberry for work (which I pretty much strongly dislike) and a Droid X for my personal phone (which I pretty much love).  I doubt that I'll ever write an article about accessories for a Blackberry, unless it's to recommend a book on how to stop swearing when your phone annoys you.  But the Droid is another story.

The Good

The first thing you want to have for your Droid X is a good screen protector, basically a clear film that goes over the screen and, as one might guess, protects it.  They're removable, and should be replaced every six months.  There are cheap ones and good ones, and my personal advice is to avoid the cheap ones.  The 3 Pack of Premium Screen Protectors for Motorola Droid X advertised below is the best I've tried.  If you're really patient, which would make you and I unalike, then there will be no bubbles after you apply the screen protector.  If there are bubbles, you won't see them when your phone is turned on, and won't care when your phone is turned off.

I keep my Droid in a black Silicone Skin Rubber Soft Cover Case, which provides inexpensive protection, and then keep the Droid in the silicone skin inside a horizontal leather case that clips onto my belt.  Whether or not all horizontal leather cases would fit the Droid X inside a rubber soft case is an open question.  The Droid X is a big phone, which is good, so a horizontal case makes a lot of sense if you need to carry your phone on your belt.

Why all the protection, and do you need it?  Seriously, the screen protectors are no-brainers, and are needed by everyone.  The rest may seem a bit of overkill if all you ever do with your phone is sit in your office with it.  Not having a desk job, my phone takes a lot of abuse.

The Bad

The fact that I still do dumb things at my advanced age is either proof that people don't get smarter as they get older, or proof that one can still be young at heart and try new things when one's hair is some shade between gray and white.  Anyway, I recently wasted - in my opinion - fifteen bucks getting something called a Gelaskin for my Droid X.  Online, it looked great, a product that claimed to offer protection without bulk, and simultaneously make my phone (and, by extension, me) look cool.  But when the product arrived I was disappointed.  What you really get are some die-cut decals that you stick on your Droid.  I wasn't too happy with the decals, but figured I'd give them a try.  Then I attempted to call someone who couldn't hear me, and realized part of the decal was covering the microphone.  Can't say whether this was my fault or the manufacturer's, but it didn't really matter, because I was already feeling like a nerdy sixth-grader with decals on his phone, so the Gelaskin went into the trash.

The Somewhat Interesting

There are not a lot of apps on my Droid X.  The Kindle app is handy, and the USA Today app is decent, but unlike some members of my family, I have not become unhealthily addicted to playing Angry Birds.

If you want to make a song on your Droid X a ringtone, it's easy.  Just copy the song onto your Droid X if it's not already there, then open up the app named "Music," find the song you want to use, and hold your finger down on the track for a few seconds.  A menu should pop up, and you just select, "Use as phone ringtone."

If you want to use a personal picture as wallpaper on your phone, just add the picture to your Droid, go to Gallery, click on the picture, click on the Left Menu button, choose "More," then choose "Set As," then choose, "Wallpaper."
